Última Epibiosis Reduction on Productivity in a Mussel Culture of Perna perna (Linné, 1758) BABT Metri,Rafael; Rocha,Rosana Moreira da; Marenzi,Adriano. Cultivated mussels (Perna perna) were studied to test for the effects of cleaning on their growth. These effects were examined by experimentally cleaning mussels and by changing mussel density. Treatment was performed twice, at two and four months after immerging the ropes. Two months after the first treatment and three months after the second treatment, mussels were harvested and measured (weight, length, width and thickness). Analysis of variance showed that none of the treatments resulted in increased growth of the mussels, nor did increased density result in decreased growth when compared with the control. Crassostrea gigas and Mytilus edulis are reared in four areas along the eastern coast of Cotentin (Normandy). Every five years, a stock assessment survey, based on a stratified random sampling is carried out using aerial photographs. During September 2000, oysters bags and mussel banks random samplings have been weighed on leasing grounds and in random sampled farms in order to evaluate the overall total gross and net weights breeded (oysters 40 000 and mussels 17 000 metric tons, net weights). Age compositions of each stock in each rearing area have been computed. This last stock assessment showed that cultural regulations are less and less observed in Normandy's breeding areas.
